On September 10, 1999 my wife Catey and I had a wonderful visit with my good friend, mentor and long time musical associate the great Benny Carter and his wife Hilma at his home in Los Angeles. Benny turned 92 years young on August 8, 1999 and although he no longer performs publicly his health has maintained pretty well although he had some rough spots earlier this year. He was in excellent spirits and we spent several hours passing the time by looking at pictures of his 92nd birthday party with photos by his close friend and biographer Ed Berger. I tried out a Unison curved soprano that had been left with him to try and compared it with my Yanagisawa curved soprano. I had sent him several mouthpieces and reeds to try. Catey took some lovely photos of us and I would like to share them with you.
